Whakapapa Ski Field
Mordor
During the winter season, the Whakapapa Ski Field evolves into a haven for skiing enthusiasts who relish the après-ski ambiance. In other times of the year, it undergoes a metamorphosis into a realm of rugged volcanic terrain.
To explore the landscape that depicted the decisive battle concluding the Second Age of Middle-earth, direct your course to Iwikau Village, a mere fifteen-minute ascent from the Grand Chateau. While the location is readily accessible, it's advisable to don sturdy hiking footwear. The landscape, characterized by rugged volcanic rock, steep precipices, and ash-laden earth, readily invokes imagery of Mordor.
Starting from the main building, head northward, tracing the perimeter of the learners' ski slope en route to Pinnacle Ridge. Just prior to ascending the ridge, journey slightly downhill and traverse along the ridge until you reach a vantage point offering views of a rugged expanse punctuated by steep cliffs. As pinpointing the exact location might be challenging, the GPS coordinates provide the most precise guidance. The slopes and adjacent parking area were the backdrop for scenes featuring Orcs engaging Elves and Men, with Elrond courageously holding his ground. In post-production at Weta Studios, an assembly of numerous additional actors was integrated to complete the cinematic tableau.
Throughout filming, meticulous care was extended to safeguard sensitive ecological zones. Extensive swaths of carpet were laid out to serve as walkways for the Orcs and Elves, preserving the underlying ground.
Adjacent to Pinnacle Ridge, the rocky prominence recognized as Meads Wall played host to the emotionally charged sequence from The Two Towers wherein Frodo and Sam apprehend Gollum. Actor Andy Serkis, outfitted in specialized attire, was captured on film descending the rocky façade and leaping onto the Hobbits. This footage was later combined at Weta Studios to give life to Gollum, derived from the actor's authentic movements.
This region also served as the backdrop for portraying the Hobbits' disoriented journey through the stony wasteland of Emyn Muil as they sought passage to the desolate plain of Dagorlad and onward to the Black Gates.
Exploring the rocky terrain of this area effortlessly plunges one into the realm of Mordor, the desolate and tormented land from which Sauron plotted his climactic battle to attain dominion over Middle-earth. Particularly evocative is an overcast day with clouds swirling around the peaks, heightening the eerie atmosphere.
Within this expanse, various close-up scenes were also captured, depicting the Hobbits' epic expedition through Mordor en route to Mount Doom.
Although filming didn't take place during the winter months, the elevated altitude and capricious weather significantly shaped the filming process across all scenes set in this vicinity.
