Paraparaumu
The Pelennor Fields
The filmmakers' ability to shoot various elements of a scene in different locations and then seamlessly merge them together is a testament to their cinematic craftsmanship. An exemplary instance of this artistry is showcased in the epic Battle of the Pelennor Fields. While expansive shots of the battle were captured in the heart of the South Island near Twizel (refer to page 100), many of the up-close moments were filmed at Queen Elizabeth Park near Paraparaumu, a mere 45-minute drive north of Wellington.
If you're traveling south towards Wellington from Otaki, you can enter the park at MacKays Crossing, located just south of Paraparaumu. Given that a significant portion of the filming was conducted against a blue-screen background, the surroundings might not be instantly recognizable. However, it was within these fields that pivotal scenes involving the downed Nazgûl and the formidable mûmakil were filmed. Taking a leisurely stroll in the park or along the nearby beach offers a pleasant diversion, and the American Memorial is well worth a pause. This memorial commemorates the extensive presence of US Marines stationed here during World War II.
Another attraction on the Kapiti Coast is Movie Horses NZ, serving as the residence for the equine stars featured in all three films. Tours are available by appointment, providing a unique opportunity to meet iconic horses like Asfaloth and Brego, along with numerous other equine celebrities, as well as their trainer, Jane Abbott. Jane, who served as the stunt-riding double for Liv Tyler and appeared in the films as a Black Rider, Rohan soldier, and Ranger, has a prominent role in the production.
