Roxy Cinema
Nestled within the heart of Miramar, Wellington, New Zealand's cinematic hub, stands The Roxy Cinema. This exquisite establishment embodies an art deco cinema theater, a multifaceted arts venue, and a restaurant, ranking as a premier attraction in the city. On April 1st, 2011, The Roxy Cinema unveiled its doors during a star-studded Opening Party attended by The Hobbit's cast and crew. A product of imaginative collaboration between the city's finest architects, builders, filmmakers, Weta Workshop artisans, designers, and talents from the hospitality industry, this stunning structure has garnered praise for its authentic art deco interior design, architectural features, and remarkable prowess as a cinema exhibition destination.
Originally known as The Capitol Theatre, this iconic Miramar edifice was reborn as The Roxy in 2011. Its history dates back to 1928, when it was established as a purpose-built, one-screen picture house, designed to showcase silent films. Transitioning in 1932 to screen 'talkies,' the cinema remained active until 1964, when its doors closed. It then underwent a transformation into the local shopping center "Capitol Court." After a period of disuse, the Camperdown Studios group acquired the building with the vision of revitalizing it into a community cinema. Though the Lord of the Rings trilogy slightly delayed the restoration plans, with the first architectural designs completed in 2006, The Roxy finally greeted patrons on April 1st, 2011, bringing immense delight to owners, locals, and visitors alike.
Now a versatile multi-arts venue, The Roxy boasts cutting-edge sound design and projection technology, two lavish theaters (164 seats and 55 seats respectively), sumptuous Italian leather seating, and the luxury of enjoying wine and snacks during screenings. This elevated cinematic experience is further enhanced by delectable meals from their thematic dine menu, accompanied by award-winning cocktails. While exuding luxury, The Roxy's warm and friendly service maintains a commitment to affordability. The venue is renowned for hosting events, which can be tracked through their Instagram and Facebook pages (@roxycinemanz / @cocoattheroxy).
The Roxy Cinema stands as a joint venture of Wellington's dynamic and creative luminaries: Oscar-winning editor Jamie Selkirk and his wife Ann, Weta Workshop founder Tania Rodger, local food enthusiast Valentina Dias and her husband Daminda, and the latest addition, the incomparable Ray Letoa. Their shared passion for film, food, and Wellington radiates through the establishment.
