Fernside
Lothlórien and the Gladden Fields
Fernside invites you to step into a world of serenity and nostalgia. Conceived in 1924 by Ella and Charles Elgar, Fernside was born from Mrs. Elgar's desire to host the affluent and influential. This elegant abode boasts spacious rooms, including a library, dining area, and drawing rooms. Visitors can lodge in one of the original four en-suite bedrooms, and the venue also caters to private events.
The gardens themselves are a pure delight, a testament to their selection to represent Lothlorien. Fashioned in the style of renowned English garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, they unfold as a series of distinct "garden rooms," each graced with its own unique plantings. The man-made lake, featured here, encapsulated moments such as the departure from Lothlórien and scenes depicting Sméagol and Déagol's fishing endeavors near the Gladden Fields, as seen in The Return of the King.
While the wooded paths were not featured in filming, they offer a scenic beauty all their own, especially during autumn. Strolling beneath the canopy of golden trees, with fallen leaves cushioning each step, is an enchanting experience.
Please note: For those interested, there are tour companies that arrange regular guided tours of the gardens. It's important to know that Fernside Gardens are accessible exclusively through these organized tours and aren't open for informal visits.
