Sculptor Biography
Benjamin Charles Wootten, or Ben Wootten, is a graphic artist and designer based in Wellington, New Zealand, where he has made significant contributions to the world of fantasy art and design. Born on March 28, 1969, in Essex, England, Wootten's family relocated to New Zealand when he was just three years old. Growing up in Whakatane, he developed a fascination with Dungeons & Dragons and The Lord of the Rings during his teenage years. After earning a degree in zoology from the University of Otago in Dunedin, he pursued his passion for graphic art at Christchurch Polytechnic in Christchurch.
Fresh out of his studies, Ben Wootten embarked on a remarkable career journey. He joined the prestigious Weta Workshop in Wellington immediately after graduation, where he worked on a range of projects, including Peter Jackson's films like King Kong and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. His contributions at Weta Workshop included the design of iconic elements such as the Balrog, Aragorn’s Strider sword, and Boromir’s sword, showcasing his ability to merge his knowledge of zoology with artistic finesse. Beyond The Lord of the Rings, he also left his creative mark on films like The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. In recent years, Wootten transitioned into a freelance illustrator in Wellington, focusing on role-playing games (RPGs) and trading card games (TCGs). His impressive client list includes industry giants like Wizards of the Coast, Paizo, and Upper Deck, with notable projects including interior illustrations for the Pathfinder: Curse of the Crimson Throne Player’s Guide and the GameMastery line's Crucible of Chaos.
